Give to the Max Day: Raising Funds for the Gary Clancy WMA

For Give to the Max Day 2016, Pheasants Forever and partners are raising funds for the Gary Clancy Wildlife Management Area. This memorial land acquisition for the famed outdoor writer will permanently protect critical wildlife habitat and create public hunting access in southern Minnesota. Every dollar raised for Give to the Max Day – from November 1 through November 17 – will be matched up to $10,000 thanks to a matching grant from the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association.

“All of us who appreciate the outdoors were blessed to have Gary's writing enlighten, educate and entertain us,” stated Craig Engwall, executive director of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association. “There is no more fitting way to recognize Gary's contributions than to create a wildlife management area in his name that can be used by those who were inspired by his work.”

The Gary Clancy Wildlife Management Area will be funded, in part, by contributions to Pheasants Forever’s Build a Wildlife Area program and the $10,000 Give to the Max Day matching grant from the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association. Donations can be scheduled in advance from November 1 through November 16 to be transacted on Give to the Max Day, November 17. The 24-hour online giving event and donation page fundraising thermometer go live at 12:00 a.m. on November 17.

“Pheasants Forever and its partners have set a goal to raise over $100,000 in memory of Gary Clancy. Give to the Max Day is the perfect opportunity for Minnesota’s hunters, anglers, and outdoor community to contribute to the cause,” said Eran Sandquist, state coordinator in Minnesota for Pheasants Forever. “Having left such a significant impact on the nation’s hunting and fishing community, the Gary Clancy Wildlife Management Area is just a small testament to one of Minnesota’s largest outdoor advocates.”

In addition to being a famed outdoor writer known across the country, Clancy was also a Vietnam veteran and a family man. His outdoor writing career took off after he returned home to Minnesota from his service in the U.S. Army. For 25 years, Clancy shared his family’s hunting and fishing lifestyle as a weekly columnist for Outdoor News. He also authored eight books, wrote for numerous national outdoor publications, and met with hunters and anglers of all ages at seminars and book signings across the country. Clancy, age 68, passed away on July 27 at his home in High Forest, Minnesota, after a lengthy battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Thursday, November 17 is Minnesota’s eighth annual Give to the Max Day. Last year, more than $18 million was raised for Minnesota-based nonprofits and schools during the 24-hour online giving event. This Give to the Max Day, help Pheasants Forever and partners honor a great, protect critical wildlife habitat and create public access – Schedule a gift today or donate on November 17.
