The Habitat Help Desk staffs up to help everyone and anyone with an upland habitat question

By Tom Carpenter, Editor at Pheasants Forever

One of the most bustling places at National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic each year is always the Habitat Help Desk. Make it a point to visit when you come to National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic this year, March 7-9 in Kansas City.

Staffed by PF & QF biologists, The Habitat Help Desk is an area of the show floor traditionally dedicated to helping farmers and landowners meet their conservation and habitat goals on their property. Field staff is here to help you!

Landowners can consult with trained PF & QF wildlife biologists to gain insights into management activities, as well as what local, state and federal voluntary conservation programs may be available for their property.

That goal lives strong. But here is an important and fun reminder: The Habitat Help Desk is open to all. You don’t have to own big acres of land to stop and visit. Everyone is invited and welcome! No question is too big or too small, and our expert biologists love to just talk upland habitat, gamebirds and wildlife.

Go away with ideas for creating or managing upland habitat on any scale:

  • Want to implement pollinator habitat in your yard? We got you covered! Folks working on “micro” habitats – even down to backyard pollinator plots – should stop by.
  • Chapter volunteers with an interest in working on habitat in their areas are welcome.
  • Perhaps you help someone manage their land, and have questions.
  • And of course, if you’re looking to put pheasant and/or quail habitat in on any size patch of land, from 4 to 40 to 400 acres, this is the place to come. If you can find your land on an aerial map, right at one of our computer screens, you can sit down with a biologist and start getting ideas and making initial plans.

One final thought. Remember that the Habitat Help Desk is not all about new habitat. Yes, that is critical. But so is habitat management. Prescribed fire, grazing, brush and tree management … keeping existing habitat healthy and vibrant is as important as putting more habitat in the ground.

Our biologists are ready to help everyone and anyone interested in better habitat for upland wildlife, from pheasants to quail to pollinators and more … and your whitetails will benefit too.

Stop by the Habitat Help Desk at National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic, and get some great, free upland habitat advice, insights and help!
