Path to the Uplands Stage Highlights

Here are a few highlights to whet your appetite. We’ll see you at the stage:

» Ben Brettingen: E-Scouting for Public Land Pheasants
Occurs Saturday at 12:30PM & Sunday at 10:30AM
Hailing from Minnesota, Ben chases upland birds from the grouse woods of the Great Lakes to points across the country as the Wingshooting Manager for onX Hunt. Through his travels and extensive use, he has developed many strategies on how to use the Hunt App to better help hunters find success behind their dogs, for many different species. Listen along as he shares his insights into finding the best spot to locate wild, public land birds.

» Tom Carpenter: Bird Dog, Family Dog
Occurs Friday at 2PM & Sunday at 12PM
“Carp,” the editor of Pheasants Forever Journal, is well-known for his blue-collar approach to upland hunting, and his low-key approach to training a bird dog. He lives a life in the uplands, and he preaches the idea that the very best bird dogs are the ones that are also loyal companions in the rest of life. You CAN have a great bird dog that is also a family companion for the whole “team” at home. Learn the secrets.

» Tyler Sladen: Falconry for Upland Birds
Occurs Saturday at 4PM & Sunday at 10AM
Tyler has been a falconer for about a decade, with 7 of those years focused on chasing quail and other upland birds over bird dogs with goshawks. His talk will focus on all aspects of hunting with birds of prey. It is a fascinating session, even if you never get a bird of prey of your own! Tyler is a professional photographer and videographer, as well as army veteran. He and his wife run a kennel of English setters, shorthairs and jagdterriers.

» Doug Duren: Not Ours, Just Our Turn: Developing Your Conservation Ethic
Occurs Saturday at 2:30PM & Sunday at 11AM

The farm has been in the Duren family for 115 years. In this session Doug will speak about hunting access and building a conservation resume, challenging hunters to explore how they can contribute most to conservation.

Doug will also talk about Sharing the Land. Sharing the Land is a Conservation Cooperators Network that connects landowners with hunters and access seekers for the purpose of stewarding and enjoying healthier lands together.

» Nick Hoffman: Getting Started: How to Find and BE an Outdoor Mentor
Occurs Saturday at 3:30PM
A story about the life-changing power of outdoor mentorship, how to find it, and how to pay it forward once you do. Join award-winning country music artist and host of Outdoor Channel’s "Nick’s Wild Ride" as he tells his story of growing up as a kid in a non-hunting family and struggling to find a mentor to introduce him to the hunting lifestyle. Learn ways to easily introduce and inspire others to take to the field.

» Hank Shaw: Getting more out of your birds
Occurs Friday at 4PM & Saturday at 1PM
A bird in the hand is only as good as what you can do with it in the pan! Forget cream of mystery casseroles using pheasant breasts – Hank is a James Beard Award-winning author and chef who will be sharing his best tips and tricks for making the most of your harvest. Following his talk there will be time for audience members to ask him questions about wild game cookery in general and purchase a signed copy of his book Pheasant, Quail, Cottontail.
