Chicken Blogs & Tools
We call our blog page at the new www.PheasantsForever.org the Pheasant Blog (www.PheasantBlog.org) but it's more than just pheasants. Dave Nomsen, Pheasants Forever's Vice President of Government Affairs recently posted an entry about a Lesser Prairie Chicken hunt in Kansas. To read about the hunt, click here.
While we're on the subject of blogs, one of Pheasants Forever's strongest supporters chased the chickens for the first time, and you can read his first-hand account, too. Billy Hildebrand, or "The Captain" as he is affectionately known, is host of FAN Outdoors, and Pheasants Forever's own Bob St.Pierre teams up with him most Saturday mornings. The duo can be heard 24-7 here, and to go to "The Captain's" prairie chicken blog, click here.
Sticking with the Lesser Prairie Chicken theme, the state of Oklahoma has developed the Lesser Prairie Chicken Spatial Planning Tool. In addition to helping to determine areas where development would least impact prairie chickens, the Spatial Planning Tool also can be used in assessing the cost of developments within the Lesser Prairie Chicken's range, as well as to prioritize areas and costs for prairie chicken habitat restoration and recovery efforts. If it is necessary to site a project or structure in an area that will impact lesser prairie chickens, developers will hopefully use the tool to determine a voluntary contribution to offset the impacts of that development. The Oklahoma Lesser Prairie Chicken Spatial Planning Tool is provided in formats compatible with both GIS (.img) and Google Earth (.kmz) and was developed through a cooperative effort by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, Oklahoma Secretary of Environment, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy, Oklahoma State University Extension Service, G.M. Sutton Avian Research Center, and the Playa Lakes Joint Venture.
