The Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies honored Col. Wallace N. Weber of Dorrance, Kansas, with its National Private Lands Fish and Wildlife Stewardship Award, one of 14 individual or entity awards at its Annual Awards Ceremony for Exemplary Commitment to Conservation Stewardship. A retired U.S. Army Colonel with 31 years of service, Wallace Weber is the third generation to run his family's 1783-acre farm in Dorrance, Kansas. A lifelong sportsman and conservationist, Col. Weber assembled a Conservation Management Team with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks to advise and assist him in the development of conservation practices. He is currently implementing the plan with his sister, Cheryl, and permanently dedicating the farm as a demonstration area for farming and wildlife to advance agronomy and conservation-minded rangeland management practices and as a field laboratory to test new conservation ideas as well as to promote the shooting sports, upland hunting and proper hunting ethics. To accomplish his vision, Col. Weber is donating portions of the property to Pheasant's Forever over the next five years and he established a charitable remainder trust for management expenses upon his passing. In its entirety, the donation is expected to be valued at more than a million dollars and when completed, it will be the largest land donation in Pheasant's Forever history.

In the news: October 2009 The Ohio State Council of Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever commended The Ohio Department of Transportation, under the leadership of Ohio Governor Ted Strickland, for cooperating with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife, in re-adopting the practice of delayed roadside mowing along the majority of Ohio's roadside right-of-ways during the summer of 2009. The recognition took place at the annual banquet of the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance in Columbus, Ohio. The practice saved Ohio taxpayers millions of dollars in highway maintenance costs and Improved Water Quality for Ohio's Lake Erie and Mississippi River Watersheds, through reduced soil erosion and provided hundreds of thousands of acres of habitat for more than 40 species of animals including upland game. The State Council has encouraged the Ohio Department of Transportation to permanently delay roadside mowing until after August 1 each year, except in intersections, immediately along the shoulder area and other areas deemed necessary for safety considerations.
