Old Veggie Tales

On the Wing: Days Gone By In recent years, Washington residents have harvested about 100,000 pheasants per year, with a good portion of the totals being stocked birds. But it was a different story in 1972, a time when annual harvests were around 650,000 per year. Jim Shurts and Cliff St. John (pictured) and Mike Schultz (the photographer) harvested these Washington roosters in Franklin County in December of that year. "We hunted some asparagus fields and didn't have a dog," Shurts said, "This was when pheasants were still abundant and you could knock on about any farmer's door and still get permission to hunt."

If you have story ideas, dog photos, pre-1980 hunting photos and requests for future On The Wing consideration, please send correspondence to ahauck@pheasantsforever.org.
