Days Gone By: January 2008
I signed up in October 2007 to become a PF member and support your organization since I am an avid pheasant hunter.
My first hunt with my Father, Wiley, was a squirrel hunt in Roberts, Louisiana, when I was 11 years old. Then we progressed to duck hunting in the marshes of southern Louisiana, dove hunts in fields of millet and dog-hunting deer when I was in my teens. I am privileged and understand the importance of introducing our children to the great outdoors. I am still hunting pheasants in Iowa where my wife's family owns land and we have many fields to hunt.
I have been a volunteer with the National Wild Turkey Federation after becoming disabled in an auto accident in 1996. I decided that I did not want to sit around and do nothing, and through friends I became a volunteer and eventually secretary of the NWTF Florida State Chapter and am proud to be part of over $1 million dollars raised for conservation in our state. I have taken single, double and triple amputees, including cerebral palsy persons, on hunts and children of all ages and introduced them to the great outdoors. I feel like I still have some time to contribute to the outdoors and that is why I would like to thank my father for taking the time to introduce me to the great outdoors.
Thanks again for all you do for conservation.
Sincerely,
Steven Dieck
I became a proud, dedicated sportsmen and hunter 35 years ago because of my father Wiley Johnson, who is now 83 years old, and his best friend Bill Jackson, who is pictured on the right side of photo.
Wiley, his good friend Bill Jackson, and son-in-law Kenney Volz and I enjoyed a week of hunting pheasants. The four of us went to Dodge City, Kansas, in the fall of 1973. This introduction has allowed me to introduce my son to the great outdoors and we have created memories the past 35 years. I am pictured with a couple of our pheasants on the bed and here is my hunting license when I was only 16 years of age.
If you have story ideas, dog photos, pre-1980 hunting photos and requests for future On The Wing consideration, please send correspondence to ahauck@pheasantsforever.org.
