In the Weeds: December 2007
"In the Weeds" takes a closer look at the chapter projects, events and happenings of the over 700 Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever chapters across the country. This month, we profile the Winnebago County Chapter of PF in Illinois.
With the encouragement and assistance of PF Habitat Specialist, Greg Keilback, the Winnebago County Chapter of PF in Illinois has made a considerable donation of $4,900 to link under privileged (urban/suburban youth) to the outdoors.
The chapter donated the money to the Severson Dells Environmental Education Center in Rockford, Illinois. This gift amount will cover the cost of 700 children attending Severson Dells education programs at the cost of $7.00 per child. Most of these children qualify for free and reduced lunches meaning that they or their schools could not otherwise afford quality nature education experiences.
"As a Habitat Naturalist I believe there are huge possibilities for PF to reach out to thousands of kids by working with these local resources," Keilback said, "These kids are the future land stewards as well as PF members and any way we can interact with them is positive for all parties involved: the children, the education center, and PF ourselves."
In addition, the Winnebago chapter has been a long term supporter of education and Pheasants Forever's Leopold Education Project (LEP), donating funds and providing scholarships for people to attend the LEP National Workshop for the last seven years.
