A THANKSGIVING ROOSTER TALE

"This is a picture of my Vizsla, Ruby. It was taken last November over Thanksgiving weekend when she was 6 months old and her first bird. It was a very exciting time for me as it was just her and I in a large CRP field. Rather warm that day, and birds were running well ahead and flying off before she could get to them or we could get into gun range. I was rather resigned to it being an unsuccessful trip out and was just looking to get her some work. I was focused ahead trying watch for running or flying birds, when I looked off directly to my left about 15 yards and saw her locked in a perfect form point – first in the field. Thinking that she was just smelling a already ran bird, I started walking over when this guy got up 10 feet in front of her. Fortunately I managed to drop it! My first bird dog in nearly 15 years, I was thrilled. We got out a few more times this past season and she scored a few more gets. Now, at just over a year, she still needs a little work on the retrieving part of the program. But if she can find them and then go locate them, I guess I can pick them up.

As told to PF by Jeff McFadden of West Des Moines, Iowa.
