Howard's Hot Sports Pick: June 2007
Howard Vincent may be the president and CEO, but he is also the resident sports expert at Pheasants Forever, Inc. & Quail Forever. Rarely missing with his sports picks, Howard lends his expertise every month with his Hot Sports Pick.
Perhaps no sport is as intertwined with Father's Day as our National Pastime. For generations, fathers and sons have bonded through baseball. They've played catch, and played hooky to catch games. And baseball has given us its fair share of great father-son combos to enjoy, names that are now synonymous with baseball lore - Griffey, Ripken, Bonds - the list goes on. In the spirit of Father's Day, this month's Hot Sports Pick takes a look at this weekend's most intriguing interleague match ups (sorry Florida at Kansas City, you didn't make the cut!).
Atlanta at Cleveland - The Tribe stays hot, getting revenge in this rematch of 1995 World Series participants.
San Francisco at Boston - Barry Bonds will find no refuge in Beantown, and neither will his Giants, who run into this Sox juggernaut. Boston appears to be on the fast track to the fall classic.
Milwaukee at Minnesota - With Milwaukee abysmal on the road, look for the Twins to use their Dome Field Advantage and take this series.
Detroit at Philadelphia - As the summer heats up, expect Ryan Howard's bat to as well. Howard breaks out and leads the Phillies to a much-needed series win over the Tigers.
LA Angels at LA Dodgers - The Angels, along with the Red Sox and Indians, have separated themselves as the American League's elite. However, the Dodgers keep pace in the highly-competitive National League West, taking this series.
NY Mets at NY Yankees - The A-Rod circus continues, but the Mets have been great on the road, so expect them to take the battle of Gotham.
Of course baseball isn't the only sport on the docket this weekend. The NASCAR Nextel Cup Series moves to Brooklyn, Michigan, for the Michigan 400 on Father's Day. In fitting fashion, look for Dale Earnhardt, Jr., to win one for his late father.
And finally, there's a little golf tournament this Father's Day weekend known as the 2007 U.S. Open Golf Championship, playing this year at Oakmont Country Club. As you'll recall, last month I went out on a limb and stated Tiger Woods would win, coming in at seven under par. There's no wavering on that pick. Woods picks up his 13th major championship, placing him just five behind Jack Nicklaus' all-time mark.
To fathers and sons and all families, have a great Father's Day!
