Five Question Friday: Nic Olberding

Five Question Friday with Nic Olberding, treasurer of the Johnson County (Kansas) Chapter of Pheasants Forever.

PF: How far do you see the Jayhawks men's basketball team going this year?

NO: Based on the level of talent they have, it would be a disappointment if they don't make the Final 4. At that point, anything can happen. To be honest though, I am a transplant here in Kansas originally from Iowa. That makes me a Hawkeye through and through. However, the Jayhawks have certainly blown the doors off of the Hawkeyes in both football and basketball this year so I have kept pretty quiet.

PF: Your favorite song from the band "Kansas"?

NO: "Dust in the Wind". It's the only one I know off the top of my head.

PF: What's Johnson County's distinguishing feature?

NO: The county's population is the fastest growing in the state of Kansas. It was 451,086 at the 2000 census, and it was estimated to be 516,731 in the year 2006. Interestingly, we have a lot of people but absolutely zero wild pheasants. However, our chapter is able to partner with other chapters throughout the state and achieve success on many different habitat projects. We are also able to successfully run annual youth hunts locally at hunting preserve for as many Johnson Co. youths that want to join up.

PF: What's your preference - a Kansas sunrise or sunset?

NO: Kansas sunrise. Living with a growing family (two boys, both Ringnecks members by the way, and a little girl on the way) the time during sunrise is the most peaceful time around our house for me. After that, everyone gets up and all heck will break loose...but that makes things fun.

PF: Living in Tornado Alley, how many twisters have you seen in your life?

NO: I have only seen three, all at a very long distance. In the last few years, we have had some pretty big ones come through a little bit southeast or a little bit northeast that just missed our area. The damage they did was significant and we were very lucky. Everyone is aware of the big one that hit Greensburg, Kansas, this last year. My thoughts and prayers go out to those folks every time I head west to hunt or we get updates on their progress back here in eastern Kansas.
