Five Question Friday: Tim Duncan

Five Question Friday with Tim Duncan of Bloomington, Minnesota.

PF:You recently purchased 65 acres in southern Minnesota. Any habitat projects in the works?

TD:My property is actually enrolled in the Wetlands Reserve Program, and the prior owner did a great job of planting native grasses. I have contacted Tom Bauman, a PF habitat specialist, to assist in the development of some natural and grain food plots as well as planting a shelterbelt. Provided I receive government approval, I hope to get started next spring. There are quite a few birds on the land now, but it clearly could hold more.

PF:When you travel, how much grief do you get about the Minnesota accent?

TD:As most Minnesotans know, the movie Fargo has kind of exaggerated the “you betcha” Minnesota slang. Still, my friends from Kansas always ask me to say the word “boat” and then mimic me by saying “booooooaaat”. Of course, that’s usually after I pull in another fish while they’re looking on helplessly.

PF:You're an avid pheasant hunter. Can you describe the one "shot" you'll always remember?

TD:Between my lab Zeke’s first retrieve, my first bird and the first bird on my new property, I’d have to go with the first pheasant I ever shot. I was 14, hunting with a fairly large group, walking with my dad when I shot my first bird with a single barrel 20-gauge (you had to cock the trigger before firing). I was thrilled, he was proud, and now that he’s gone, that’s a memory I recall every once and a while when I’m walking in a field on a nice fall afternoon. It’s great that I can still carry on the pheasant hunting tradition with my stepfather.

PF:What are you most looking forward to in 2008?

TD:In 2008 I plan on running Grandma’s marathon, watching my oldest graduate from high school, celebrating my 20th wedding anniversary, and now that I think about it, probably feeling old.

PF:Ever been mistaken for the San Antonio Spurs basketball player of the same name?

TD:Hey, try to get an email address or domain name when you’re namesake is Tim Duncan (good luck finding me if you Google my name by the way). ESPN magazine contacted all the Tim Duncans in the USA to put our pictures in some sort of magazine ad about Tim Duncan the hoops star, but wouldn’t use me because I was over 40. Ironically, when I saw the ad, almost every one of the other Tim Duncans was bald or gray anyhow. Of course, I’m not bitter at all.
