East Coast Conservation: Pheasants Forever Finds New Home in South Jersey

Upland hunters in New Jersey have embraced a local model for wildlife habitat conservation by adding a new chapter of Pheasants Forever in the state. Officially known as the South Jersey Chapter of Pheasants Forever, the local committee is focused on assisting the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife with habitat improvement projects where possible, while adding more youth and families to the ranks of the state’s outdoor community.

"As a new chapter of Pheasants Forever, we’d like to share the organization’s mission of wildlife habitat conservation with fellow outdoor enthusiasts in South Jersey," stated Scott Haley, elected president of the South Jersey Chapter of Pheasants Forever. "To accomplish this goal, the chapter has set its sights on completing habitat projects, land acquisitions, and outdoor education events for youth in the surrounding communities.”

Pheasants Forever empowers local chapters with the responsibility to determine how 100 percent of their locally-raised conservation funds will be spent. This local control allows members to see the fruits of their chapter efforts in their own communities, while belonging to a national organization with a voice on federal conservation policy. Since creation in 1982, Pheasants Forever and its local chapters have spent $634 million on 502,000 habitat projects benefiting 14.1 million acres nationwide. The newly established South Jersey Chapter of Pheasants Forever will promote this same model throughout the state’s southern tier in hopes of having a positive impact on wildlife habitat conservation efforts in Atlantic, Cumberland, and Salem counties.

“A passion for pheasant hunting and creating diverse landscapes where wildlife can thrive is the primary driver for establishing the South Jersey Chapter of Pheasants Forever,” said Charlie Payne, regional representative for Pheasants Forever in New Jersey. “Our new chapter volunteers have shown a lot of enthusiasm and commitment to the mission of Pheasants Forever, and I look forward to helping them develop a successful chapter on the East Coast.”
