Rooster Review: Danner Sharptail Boots

As we push through day four of our Rooster Road Trip, we’ve logged miles across South Dakota’s expansive Fort Pierre National Grasslands, thick shelter belts outside of Onida, huge stands of big bluestem north of Webster, cattail marshes outside of Aberdeen, and now a mosaic of prairie and wetlands near Marshall, Minnesota. Did I mention we’ve covered all of this terrain in only four days?

When embarking on such an aggressive upland hunting trip, there are two things you need to take especially good care of: your bird dogs and your feet. Nothing will make a hunt more miserable than your dogs barking at you, and I’m not referring to the four-legged variety.

I’ve been lacing up Danner’s 8” Sharptail hunting boots for the entirety of this trip and must admit they’ve been put through the ringer – even more so than what a “normal” upland hunting trip would entail. These boots saved my ankles from a surprise encounter with a gopher hole, climbed elevation without rubbing my heels raw, and forded soaked cattail sloughs while keeping my feet none-the-wiser.

Danner’s waterproof, breathable GORE-TEX® lining is the real deal. When it comes to hunting boots, everyone wants them to be waterproof, but few really go the length and test if they’re up to snuff. However, when public land roosters are cackling in the middle of a marsh, you go after them. That’s exactly what we did. And when we arrived back at the tailgate, our dogs were happy because of it – both the four-legged and five-toed kind.
